whatever xchat ubuntu comes with.
I've used BitchX, irssi, and gaim for IRC, but I like GUI ones and gaim is just too basic.

I'm a bitchx kind of guy.
I have a few open right now in a screen session on my friend's BSD server in California :) The client has a 140 day uptime.

Nobody uses Mirc anymore? I don't ever chat online, but when I did, it was mirc. Is it pretty much obsolete now?

Well Mirc is not a native client for linux, you can run it through wine, but most people prefer a native linux client.

I'm a fan of Konversation, apart from the resizing it does to itself if you start getting lagged out. On Windows (main box is Kubuntu, laptop is WinXP so as not to scare clients too much) I use a third party xchat build. How about that for contrary :-)

Xchat with transparency, hidden menu and userbar--so it's nice and compact.
Tried Xchat-gnome and don't really see an improvement--I mean--there's no way to graphically join a channel (server--join channel) other than editing the autojoin list. Not a big deal for me, it's just a matter of /j #*, but how is this better and simpler for the novice? Some of the conventional IRC terms have been renamed. A pointless project, imho, but if somebody wants to code it, by all means, hack away.
The Xchat Windows issue is a non-issue, there are several free builds out in the wild that work great.
I really couldn't care less if Xchat doesn't fit the Gnome HIG 100%--it's close enough and works well.
I also use Gaim for IRC and it's just fine.
Don't see the need for console clients unless you're a power user, I just gab and send the odd file, so gui goodness works fine.

irssi all the way. I love the screen + ssh + irssi combination, its awesome and it fits my needs. I like x-chat too but its not as flexible as irssi.

Xchat with some custom pythonsripts (sets |a on my nick when I'm gone, and autojoins predefined channels on startup). xchat is just so customizable:D

I used to use XChat until they made it Shareware.
Now I use the ChatZilla plugin for Firefox. Works great.

Plenty of people still use mirc, it's the best irc client for windows next after the unofficial windows versions of xchat. But there is no linux version of mirc so people here prolly won't use it.
I use xchat, it just has such a functional, easy, nice and loveable user interface. :D

Im wondering - do all of the clients that u mention support downloading the files from irc servers? (like fserves). because for now I use Kopete for chatting (and it does support IRC, but i was not able to dload anything thru it).
so im basically looking for a user-friendly soft to get files from irc... ? i guess ill try them all one by one, but any suggestions appreciated ;-)

I use Xchat primarily, but I have found a very nice NCurses client called 'Rhapsody'
You can find it here;

teknap (on both windows and linux) has the advantage of being a damn good p2p client if you can be arsed to get to know it :)
Been using it for years now :) however not recently due to no support for blowfish encryption plugins. XChat is the one im forced to use :(
