What version of Xubuntu shoul I install on a Compaq Presario 5838?

I tried to install Mepis and would boot but only give me text once it was done. No gui.... It also said something about the bios having a cutoff point of 2000 and mine are 1999. What should I do? Will xubuntu 8.04.1 work with this or do I need xubuntu an earlier version?

That's just the lack of ACPI, it doesn't matter until you want to try Suspend/Hibernate (spoilers: it won't work unless you force acpi), but those are quite useless on a desktop.
Anyways, what are the specs?

256 or 512 MB of ram...

FX3D card or something... I have to install a sound card and a 20GB HD

The liveCD worked but it wouldn't boot right.... how do I force ACPI?

I also do not have it with me ATM. It is at a friends house. I have been trying to get it up and running. They do not even have enough money to get a 240 USD desktop...
