ok here's the deal. I don't mind spending a few extra bucks for something super (in fact I insist upon it.) There are a lot of brands on the internet and it's overwhelming. has anyone any recommendations?

Since you haven't mentioned whether you are looking for laptops or desktops(macs come in minis too :) )..I am going to go on a whim and assume laptops.

Lenovo Thinkpads - the ones I have heat up too much....but other than that they are pretty durable.
You could also try out the newer Ideapads ..but they are on the heavier side.

HP - biggest bang for the buck. Would recommend taking additional warranty on it. One of my HP 17" started having motherboard issues 15 days after the warranty expired - although they did change my motherboard(or so they say) for free once i complained.

Dell - They sell Ubuntu machines as well.

Sony - I have never been a fan of Sony machine :(

I think the new eee pcs are pretty sweet, even if the new models are a little pricey for the features IMO. I guess there are some odd things like the wibrain (http://www.wibrain.com/), too.

Personally, I'm not a big HP fan, but maybe just bad luck.

I rather like my N800, but it's a bit too wee for this purpose.
