View Full Version : Cool names for evil techno corparations, and no I am not talking about microsoft

I am writing a piece of science fiction right now and I am having a little problem coming up with a name for something.
In my story there is an evil technology company that controls most of the country it is in (like how microsoft is :p).
But I am having a block on a good name for it.
In science fiction a evil corparation is a benchmark, OCP from robocop, Weyland-Yutani from the alien movies, Shin-Ra from final fantasy VII.
I want a cool sounding name, or at least the basis for one.
Just looking for bounceback :D

This is what I could think of:

Acme, Inc.
"The Company" (Nervous glance over shoulder is required whenever you say this one.)
Omega, Inc.
Ubisphere, Inc.

My mom also came up with "Korbitron, Inc," which is pretty good.

well the tone of this story is very cyberpunk in nature.
The world I created is a world like our own in many respects, and is set on a nation that is on the verge of becoming a technological and militaristic dystopia.
Where technology is in advance of our own and the people live in fear of terrorism and such.
The company in question is a cybernetics/ robotics company that has a weapons devision as well and they are looking to control everybody with the power of fear and cybernetic augmentation.
This company intends to turn the citizens of the planet into cyborgs they can control, and its up to a team of cyborgs opposed to this corparation to stop them.

No but I am aware of the game and its story...
Its characters and placement that will make this stand out, for one its set on a different world with non human characters and the characters are very dynamic on their own.

Omnipresent + authority, like Megatron in the movie Transformers.

What about Omni-tron? ;)

A Brave New World.

I know of this story too, but dont worry the storyline I gave is not the central theme... just one of the themes mixed into the story.
There is a superhero edge in the story, it also has romance and some comedy.
That storyline is just a backdrop to the main story.

Just giving you a hard time if your brave enough to write a book your not illiterate. Get it done and I will buy a copy as soon as it is available. Always support your semi local artists. :)

Seeings you said there was a bit of comedy in it, maybe you should make a parody name. Maybe something like New World Tyrellium. (Parody of Brave New World and Blade Runner)

No the comedy is actually on and off, the company is a major player in the story so I dont want a silly name.

Photic Dreams, or just Lumin, or Glory. All the fancy names are taken. If it was me I'd just make something up, some made up word that sounds cool, or something like an ordinary name. Just a guess, I have no idea what your story is.

Some names which I rather like but have been taken:

R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots)
General Products
Fokker-Mueller

From off the top of my head, I can think of four categories of names for corporations:
Founder's name (e.g. Miller's, Roche)
Name of the location where the corporation resides
Name descriptive of what the corporation does (see my first example, Precision Gears, or BASF)
Arbitrary words or made-up words

Some strange effects occur in the course of time when a corporation changes the owner, the nature of its business or when it merges with other corporations. The interesting cases are
Name remains unchanged
Names are concatenated

The third case (name is adapted or replaced) is not 'interesting' because it then becomes just another name.

Hence, I thought my original suggestion (Precision Gears) slightly amusing because the name was wildly inaccurate for what the corporation actually does, but it might suggest some strange periods within the history of the corporation.

Surely it shouldn't sound evil, or even out-of-the-ordinary? Before Bladerunner a company could have called itself the Tyrell Corporation and no one would have batted an eyelid. Why not try to pick something very generic or nondescript. If the book is good enough, it will enter the lexicon of evil soon enough. :)

I vote for a surname followed by Corporation/Industries/Incorporated/Systems
