gutsy to hardy upgrade now x crashes after login

I am having an issue with X after upgrading to 8.04 from 7.10 which seemed to go ok.
I am given the login screen as normal which is displayed fine, I login and the screen flashes a couple of times and the goes black and i am show the login screen again. Anyone have any suggestions?

I have an ati X800 which was setup and working fine on gutsy, I have tried "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" which only asks me question about my keyboard and mouse.

Hope someone can help, I really don't want to have to do a clean install.

I have managed to get in, at the login screen i changed the session to failsafe gnome. I have removed some things from my start up programs maybe it will work after reboot, are there any other startup scripts configured anywhere else?
