I am so keen to upgrade to hardy, i don't want to be left behind..

When trying to run the install from the CD i don't get very far. I am getting a couple of rows of coloured squares.

7.04 ran with no errors, 7.10 i no longer get loading bar and now i cant get 8.04 to run at all. Im going backwards.

I have an Acer Aspire 2010 laptop with ATI 9700 card.

Any ideas?

Try installing Hardy in safe-graphics mode? Or even the alternate CD?
Or you can try this (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardyUpgrades#Upgrading%20using%20the%20alternate% 20CD/DVD). Upgrading directly with the cd.

The screen goes mostly blank, accept for the top where there is a couple of lines and coloured squares. The computer hangs at this point and i cant get any response.

I was successfully able to run live CD in safe-graphics mode.

Then installed Catalyst 8.6 manually. http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Hardy_Installation_Guide

Works like a charm... :)
