Hit alt+F2 and type "displayconfig-gtk" (without the quotes), select your monitor and then your correct resolution. If you have an Nvidia card then again and type "gksudo nvidia-settings" (again without the quotes) and hit "Save to X Configuration File", restart and you should be OK.

You should log out and log back in for changes to take effect.

i think you should find out what graphic card you are using by typing
lspci
in terminal.
If you have problems to open a terminal, just switch away from your x-environment by typing
Strg-Alt-F2
then log in.
the result should look like:
00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 PCI Bridge (rev e1)
00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801GB/GR (ICH7 Family) LPC Interface Bridge (rev 01)
00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801GB/GR/GH (ICH7 Family) SATA IDE Controller (rev 01)
00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) SMBus Controller (rev 01)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 8400 GS (rev a1)
02:05.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8110SC/8169SC Gigabit Ethernet (rev 10)
you can see it says "VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 8400 GS", look for something similar.
Or post your result here

so here a possible solution in english:
remove unwanted drivers:
sudo apt-get -f remove xserver-xorg-video-openchrome xserver-xorg-video-unichrome
edit your xserver-config:
sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
go to section "device" an change Driver "vesa" to Driver "via" + add two lines. it should look like this:
Section "Device"
Identifier "VIA Technologies"
Driver "via"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
Option "VBEModes" "true"
Option "EnableAGPDMA"
EndSection
Save the file and restart your X-Server by:
Strg-Alt-Backspace
to check if your driver is working type:
glxinfo | grep direct
when it says "Direct rendering = yes" it worked
