Thank goodness someone is here to save us from the outages and spam of Twitter! Identi.ca (http://identi.ca) is an open-source micro-blogging platform that is poised to be a Twitter-killer (hopefully) and I'm pretty excited about it. Here are some of the features they hope to implement soon.

* SMS updates and notifications
* A Twitter-compatible API
* More AJAX-y interface
* Maps
* Cross-post to Twitter, Pownce, Jaiku, etc.
* Pull messages from Twitter, Pownce, Jaiku, etc.
* Facebook integration
* Hashtags
* Image, video, audio notices
* Automatic url-shortening
* Multilingual interface (using Gettext)

My username is HeadlessHorseman, please share your usernames and help get this project the attention it deserves!

i was reading about this the other day, the reason it's supposed to be better then twitter is something to do with the server hosting, it shouldn't fall down like twitter does.

i've never used any of those micro-blogging sites though and don't think i'll ever sign up. i couldn't care less what anyone is doing, and don't want anyone to know what i'm doing either lol. the internet is full of egomaniacs, it makes me cringe!!! or maybe i'm missing the point or something :confused:

So is Gwibber a good choice of client?

How do you install it? Their Launchpad site doesn't show any downloads, but I've heard of people using it.

I followed http://linuxbasement.com/content/installing-gwibber-ubuntu-hardy. It installed in /main instead of /gwibber, but the client itself seems to be working.

GWibber is awesome. VERY customizable.

to install it -
install bzr from the repos.
Also make sure these are installed

python (2.5)
python-dbus (0.80.2)
python-gtk2 (2.10.4)
python-gconf (2.18.0)
python-notify (0.1.1)
python-simplejson (1.7.3)

In my case the only thing I had to install was python-simplejson. The rest were already installed.

run this at the command line:

bzr branch lp:gwibber

Follow the instructions in the install doc in the gwibber folder.

I didn't bother installing it. I just run it from my home folder.

Features identi.ca has already implemented, thanks to contributors (all within weeks, if not days of it being requested or someone saying, "I'll take care of that"):
SMS
Hashtags
Replies
Twitter compatible API.

Yeah, identi.ca is pretty swell.

I saw some pretty neat FOSS alternatives to things like Myspace today, though:

http://elgg.org/

Dolphin looks like a full-on Myspace alternative, though.

http://www.boonex.com/products/dolphin/

Both are under the GPL.

There honestly needs to be an official FOSS social network. That would rock my socks.

Edit: Oh yeah, by the way: I'm lastguyonearth on both identi.ca and Twitter.

I'm new to this project, that has also introduced me the micro-blogging concept. I think it's cool, at the time. Zero problems, at all.

My nickname there is the same as here.

I don't really get this microblogging stuff :(
I can post 140 character long, SMS like messages with no formatting, no rich content... Why? :)

open source savior?

I don't think so.

My ego isn't big enough for me to be active on those social sites.

Also, I don't give a rats behind what other people are doing.

You can post to groups of people easily. I tweet about IT and related issues. There is group of people into digital rights in the UK. I am one of them see my sig for my web site. Plus I also tweet to some people from these forums, including a Mod. Everyone on my twitter list of friends gets my tweets, unless I direct message someone individually.

I have to say I am interested in identi.ca if I can get a good client for 64 bit Hardy. I like clients rather than the web based apps. I use twitux for twitter.

I have signed up for identi.ca. My username for that and twitter is the same as the Ubuntu forums helliewm. If you see me on the web/forums with this username it is me. I always use the same username.

Anyone from the forums feel free to add to me to your twitter or identi.ca.

Hope that explains it.

Helen

Edit: Its excellent to keep in touch with people quickly who share your interests.

Is it possible to have twitter and identi.ca update to the same application?

Started using Gwibber yesterday from those packages... wow. It's simply amazing. Twitter or Identi.ca users, you need to be using this. So much awesome contained in a little download.

FYI - There is a very interesting interview (http://twit.tv/floss37) with Evan Prodromou from identi.ca (and Laconica) on FLOSS Weekly this week.
