What is the best way to find your favorite distro?

Install Ubuntu.

Read up on them some, set up a spare computer if possible or repartition your hard drive to test them out and hope you have access to a high speed connection.

My solution was trial and error, consisting of mandrake, redhat,fedora, debian, suse, tried gentoo, back to mandriva then settling on Ubuntu

But seriously you just have to try what you think may be good and see where your most productive at.

You could take a look at Distrowatch (http://www.distrowatch.com) too. I also used the trial and error method, but Ubuntu was the only distro with proper hardware support for my notebook.

Research. If you've got a nice high-speed connection, dl an ISO and give it a whack. LIVE CDs are also great, they give you a great opportunity to see what you might be getting yourself into.

After starting with Mandrake, I knew I wanted more, so I was on dial up, I found a place to get cheap linux cd's and got Debian Woody and Slackware 9.0 as well as Mandrake 9. I played with all of them until I found the one I liked. Doing more reading around various forums, I read about different distros and made the decision on what I wanted to try.

im a linux newie, the installation of Ubuntu was more simple than 2000 or WinXP. It detected all my hardware without installing any driver or ask me any question like: install? are you sure? are you sure that you are 100% sure?" kind of stuff.

i recomend Ubuntu, its awesome and im finally Free of windows propietary nigthmare.

I have already, I'm using ubuntu for about 6 months now and I'm very hapy with it. But was just wondering is there still something better out there.

Tried that or something like it a long time ago, I think it told me Suse and Fedora then. Just tried it now and it gave me Debian/Ubuntu:smile:

What is the best way to find your favorite distro?

write down your criteria. go to distrowatch.com, begin downloading each distro one by one if you like the description (for example, I don' like those minimalist distros bc. I want too many software to be installed). try each for a week or so (or less). save the live cds for the last to try.

as you try, go tru your criteria, update it and make notes.

continue trying until you say "hey, this one is much much better". I ended up with ubuntu after about 9 distros... good luck

There is no way to find a distro that is sure to work for everyone.

Here's what influences me: reviews, ratings, distrowatch.com, forums, features, support--I like the distro to have good support. No mailing-list support for me--.

Mailing lists are awesome support! I haven't participated in the Ubuntu mailing list in a while, but I still read it, and it's still very informative. There may be more quality information going through there than any other ubuntu function other than the wiki.
