Can't Login

I installed some updates including some kernel bits and pieces using the ubuntu update thingy (the one that pops open a window and says that updates are available).

Now when I boot up the PC gets to a point and the screen goes blank and it does not ask me to login. Ubuntu is still running the servers (web, proxy, etc) but I can login.

Please anybody???

Ubuntu starts up normally, then goes to a screen that gives the various [ok] on all the services started.

The a message appears: linux PC login, after this the screen goes blank. 8-[
