woot. I'm hosting a LAN party at my house in a couple weeks and I was wondering how to create the network. All the computers will be running ******* (for the games of course) but I was wondering what would be better, finding a 10 or 8 slot ethernet hub or buying one, or using my wireless network which uses a 54mbit linksys wrt54g router, and all six (including myself) participants have wireless g capable receivers, so everyone should have 54mbit ethernet wirelessly. Would the gaming take a performance hit from this? Should I shell out money to get a gigabit 8 port ethernet hub or use wireless? I also have a 5 port megabit 5 port hub and the router has 4 ports on it so I think hooking all of that together would yield the right number of ports but only 100 megabit ethernet. So how should I go about this?

any suggestions appreciated

Definately do not use the wireless. The throughput may be high enough depending on the game you are playing but the ping times are miserable for gaming. Instead just grab a switch and plug it into your router. You may want to just do it right the first time and get a decent 16 port switch so that if you have more people over next time you dont have to keep buying up (provided you have the money for it). Either way switches are rather cheap especially if you get your friends to chip in so you guys can split it.

EDIT: Personally I use this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127082

You could use this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127082

I don't know if that's what you're looking for.

Yeah, most definitely need a 100mb switch (not a hub). You'll be miserable without it.

Thanks for the advice guys!

I've decided to buy the D-Link 8 port switch here (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127082)

thanks again

Buy a hub, keep the packaging and receipt, then return it the day after :)
