View Full Version : [ubuntu] WoW Installation Problem

July 8th, 2008, 03:59 PM
Hello! Yesterday i installed Ubuntu on my computer and i have to say that is very good. I hadnt problems, but today i take the decision to install World of Warcraft to Ubuntu.
I followed the HOW TO for this, from the official site and i read threads similar to this one, but i couldn't play :/

My problem is that i did the 2 methods (install wine and then from the disks copy paste the right files etc, and the second method with copy paste the whole installation folder from Windows) but none of them take me to the solution.

When i click on the icon at desktop or at the icon "World of Warcraft from Wine, my resolution turns to be smaller (bigger icons, bigger panels etc) and nothing happens.
When i click again at one of the icons, World of Warcraft is starting but when it opens, i see the page which i have to accept the Terms to be freezing. I can only move the mouse (mouse is the one that WoW have).

If you have an idea on how to solve this, please post a reply.
Thank you

You could also try with Wine-doors or PlayonLinux:

I have not installed WoW with any of them, but used them for other stuff and they worked great. Though I recommended another guy here to install WoW with one of them, and he got some problems. But I guess it works for must people, since they include it in the program.

Thanks for the information aktiwers. I will use the 2 programs that you proposed me if i dont find a solution with the Wine Method.

Is there someone else that can help please? :)

Those 2 programs use Wine also. They just configure it for you and install extra stuff that is needed for WoW to run properly automatically.

Maybe you can use some of Hyper_ch advice in the end of this post:

Thanks for your interest once again aktiwers.
But i just found the solution. I found this (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=848953)thread and i copied pasted the settings of config.wtf that i found and when i opened the game, all was perfect.
I am sure that i will find more problems when i will login to game (because now i am updating, i have to play wow for about 1 year) but i hope that the solution will be out there :P

What version of wine are you using? I had the same problem, don't remember the exact version though. But the latest version (need 9.04 to run it) fixed the problem for me.
