nethack-gnome wizard mode

I'll say it up front, I'm going to cheat. I did something stupid, I'm too far into the game to start again, I just want one item back.

I've been researching ways to recover this item (a spellbook) and it looks like a quick jump into wizard mode for a wish will take care of things. However, I'm having two problems:

1. If wizard mode requires root and my game is saved under my username, how can I access my saved game when I (presumably) run nethack as root?

2. How do I start nethack-gnome in wizard mode? Can it be as easy as adding something to the nethackrc file?
