View Full Version : [ubuntu] Reading the install disk

Hi,

I'd like to install Ubuntu 8.04 on a new Asus/Intel computer with a (currently) unformatted hard disk.

I'm new to Linux but fairly experienced with DOS configurations.

I burned and checksummed the desktop ISO file at ubuntu.com to an install disk.

However, the CD player, which is set to be recognized first and its light flashes, won't start the CD but returns the error message "Reboot and select proper boot device or Insert Boot media in selected Boot device and press a key"

My question is:
Does the install disk only work from Windows; that is, is it not supposed to be a bootable CD? The website doesn't seem to explain.

If it's not bootable, then how does one install from a combo disk that prompts partitioning etc?

Cheers,

Sven

Did you burn the .iso as an IMAGE (not data)?

Hi.

The CD is working now but the system has now hung twice at "Loading Linux Kernel 100%"

Should I reburn the CD and try again?

the 'cd integrity' test on the menu screen should tell you if you got a good or bad burn, It might be something else, i.e. you may have to enter a boot option/kernel parameter. Check F1 help first

Thanks logos 34.

I've tried the CD integrity test twice but it just loads the kernel and stops at 100%, and doesn't report anything.

I don't see anything useful in the F1 help.

I suppose I could load it without graphics. Apparently that's possible.

Can't hurt to re-burn the CD at slow speed and try again, I suppose.

try here:

and/or google your asus model for possible hints

Thanks I looked at that page and I did reburn it and the new CD checks out fine on the integrity check.

But now I'm thinking I should perhaps download the 64-bit version.

I'm up and running from the CD!

But I'm downloading the 64-bit version so I'll likely install from that.

Thanks for your help!

Sven
