Cannot access KDE

After the lights went out and the PC was incorrectly shut down, I can no longer access kde. I get to the login window, enter my user id and passowrd but then I'm sent back to the same login window. I'm though able to enter in console mode with my user id and password but cannot start kde. I tried to 'sudo apt-get reinstall kdm' and the 'sudo kdm', but it made no difference...Any ideas as to how to solve this without reinstalling?

SOLVED !! It was a problem with disk space easily resolved once identified.
