I have been through all the sites, downloaded so many things and tried so many commands and it's just not working.

I know there's instuctions on the java website, but I can't make head or tail of them (I can't login as root for some reason).

I would be very grateful if someone gave me a code or small tute on how to do this, so that I'll understand... I know it has something to do with a .bin file, but I don't have a clue where to start with that.

So thanks to anyone who can help - you'd be helping me out of the very difficult spot :)

I can't remember which version it is, but some Java components are available from the "Add/Remove programs" menu

JRE 1.5 is available through the repositories - look for sun-java-5 runtime

The package name is sun-java5-jre , make sure you have the "universe" repositories enabled.
