Hello all,

This is a very basic question. I am new to ubuntu and i have been wanting to know what is the difference between Hardy and Gusty Linux/ubuntu? I am using Ubuntu 8.0, a download from the site, how do i know if its hardy or gusty? What do they mean?

Cheers,
Avinash

They are just code names used for each release. So Ubuntu 8.04 is Hardy, the previous release 7.10 was gutsy. And the difference is newer software versions and features in a nutshell.

A new version of Ubuntu comes out every 6 months.

The latest is Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 (the 8 stands for 2008, the 04 is the month it came out).

Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 was the previous Ubuntu version, which came out in October of 2007.

The numbers are just the year and month of the release.Do 8.04 would mean it was released on April 2008 and 7.10 in October 2007. I use 8.04 and I don't have ( too much) problem with it.:)

... XP and VISTA ...
Gutsy and Hardy would rather correspond to Whistler and Longhorn. ;)

@OP: Mark the thread as solved if your question has answered.

not really... Hardy and Gutsy are official names as are XP and VISTA ;)

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DevelopmentCodeNames

Gutsy and Hardy were development code names (as were Whistler and Longhorn). The official names for these are:

Ubuntu 7.10
Ubuntu 8.04

However, partly because Ubuntu is a community effort, the code names usually leak out into general usage.
