last year i bought the cheapest p3 laptop i could find with the most basic requirements to run the dapper drake 6.06 LTS disc that my roommate gave me. everything runs well and i've been using it for a year and it's a lot quicker than the windows that came with the laptop.

however lately it's just been freezing up. no series of keystrokes (ctl-alt-delete or clt-alt-backspace) can unfreeze it so i have to turn it off and then turn it back on. it seems to be doing this more and more often.

a simple solution would be to upgrade hardware and software but i'm curious if there's anything else i can do to remedy this problem.

cheers,
chris

Is the laptop getting very warm? If so you coud try cleaning out the CPU fan holes on the underside of the machine.

I would also seriously consider updating to at least Gutsy (7.10), as Dapper is no longer supported for security updates.

Generally, a clean install is the best way to go.

Hardy (8.10) still has some teething problems and may be worth giving a miss for a while.
