The problem here is that I've found i can't get ndiswrapper installed until I've updated the kernel. This means I have to have a hardwired connection to reinstall linux or I'm USC. The kernel update doesn't work unless I do the regular system updates. I'm wondering if I can save the update to a local location and update directly from the file after installation.

You could use the Package Manager "Generate package download script" feature to upgrade your machine. Here (http://beans.seartipy.com/2006/11/03/simple-way-to-update-ubuntu-edgy-with-slowno-internet-connection/) is a how to.

Edit: At step 2b, if you don't have another linux machine that you can use to download the updates, use the ubuntu live cd.
