View Full Version : Best MMO for Linux?

Hi,
I've always been a fps gamer that was until I got hooked on TES4:Oblivion last month but I want to move into an MMO for even greater scope.
I was wondering if there is anything like Oblivion available for Linux with similar game play style but online. If not, what is considered the best MMO for linux? I'm prepared to pay a subscription if its reasonable.
Thanks :)

lol, great scope? by scope you mean more whiny 10 year olds right? :P
just kidding, you should really specify if you want pay to play mmo's (commercial mmo's) or free to play, there's a big difference.
best commercial:
-eve online - space mmo, runs perfectly
-world of warcraft - biggest mmo out there, no doubt about that
-neverwinter nights - not quite an mmo but good multiplayer rpg
free to play:
most of the quality on these is questionable, ill let someone else suggest a few...

Commercial or free it doesn't really matter ;)
Thanks for your response :D

Runescape is good mmo, which you can play for free or pay to play. There are loads of skills to train and use, lots explore, loads of mini games and each quest is very different (unlike WoW). Although, there are alot of 13yr olds try to find boyfriends & girlfriends.

FPS MMO:
Nexuiz or OpenArena. Both are free to play (you can get them via apt-get). I prefer Nexuiz.

I play GuildWars through wine under ubuntu.
And after tweaking wine (set the videocard memory) it runs well +- 60FPS.

Well wouldn't say best, however different is a good description. Feel free to give DigOurGame (DOG) a shot. Our site is http://dog.servegame.org/ We are a free 2d mmorpg built on the arianne game engine. Our client runs on linux and any os that supports java.

WoW runs on WINE perfectly with some fiddling with it from what ive heard.
I really wouldnt recommend "Ruinedmylifescape" as a famous RS player called it.
Planeshift is a rapidly growing free mmorpg in beta, its got a linux client and all.

I would recommend that you try out Vendetta Online if you want more action out of your MMOs. This game has native ports for Windows, Mac and Linux, and is a space-based MMO, in which combat is the main emphasis. Leveling takes significantly less time than in other major games, and the game has 'twitch-based' combat. It is an extremely fun and inexpensive game which receives updates on a weekly basis and as such is constantly gaining new content. If nothing else, try the free trial:

Savage and Savage 2 are not MMOs, never have been, never will be, it's a failed attempt to lure players to try it, I love the game but hate when ppl say it's an MMO or anything like an MMO or a RPG, it's a first person action game with minimal rpg elements like (more or less the same as saying Quake or Starcraft is rpgs or MMOs >_<
MMO means MASSIVE Multiplayer Online, playing with max 40-50 other ppl on a server running small maps and matches, usually less is not MASSIVE Multiplayer and the fact that a pure action game even tries to market like that is a fail :/
Great game, have been active in the Savage 2 community but sorry just hate it when ppl try to sell it as a MMO or a RPG >_<
Basic rules:
If you are going to call a game MMO then make sure it's at least 100+ players on it (not just in chat or different rooms) and most often a persistent world (general rule, some might not follow this but haven't seen one so far) and not joining games/matches like CS, Starcraft etc.
For it to be an RPG there has to be actual Role Playing involved, if you have one character that evolves (usually) during game play, think Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter then you have a RPG, Quake/DOOM in a way is RPG but tends not to be counted towards that since their main attraction is the action (First Person Shooter) and the story is seen more as a filler, also the characters don't evolve, they just pick up ammo and weapons.

If its RP scope you want try Second Life and go to some of the roleplay or combat sims. :) Linux native so no WINE either.

Dont they call themselves and RTS/FPS?

There was this one 'linux games' site that called every game an MMO just for featuring at least 2 player TCP-IP multiplayer. Forgot what it was called though since the site was a forgettable phpnuke site.
'Massive' originally applied to servers carrying a regular load of 1000+ players (Ultima Online really coined that one), but I guess these days you can stick that on anything that serves 32+ or more.
Fantasy settings often cause a weird bias of a genre towards 'rpg', i've seen Savage 2 been called an RPG so many times. It's more like a FPS game with a commander that can do overhead stuff, similar to the Battlezone games from the late 90s. Savage 2 is one of the last games of this dying hybrid breed of RTS/FPS greatness, so let's enjoy it while it's still very hot.

They do sort of but also trying to add in RPG sometimes and even MMO, I think the misstake was their teaser that said
is it an FPS?
is it an RTS?
is it an RPG?
is it an MMO?
I think in the spirit of Superman
is it a bird?
is it a plane?
NO! it's Superman
they just missed the
NO!, it's Savage. part :P
Also I think from the start they had more RPG plans I think, for ex. there is an early beta movie where you can see a scout mounting a horse as if off to deliver something.
Sadly this has been taken by the community and I even told Merc (the one person from S2 that is working 100% on it that they should avoid it and he agreed.
Sadly last patches however even thou the game is great broke game play a lot, they did a bi push since they lost 50% of all users when switching combat system and they release a bit patch with lots of fixes and upgrades with help from the community (myself included), there where some bugs which is not uncommon but the hotfixes just made it worse :(

Guild Wars runs flawless under WINE, is free to play once you bought the game and is really great IMO both if you're a single player like me or a group player :)

Currently my favorite MMO is puzzle pirates (www.puzzlepirates.com). It's a java based game and so runs linux natively however it's very different then most other MMO's and if you're looking for something to replace WoW it's not for you.

very interested in trying savage 2: has a Linux client and even has Australian servers and is download free if you are with internode (rare for Aussie gamers to have a mmo) - looks a bit different from your typical grind mmo, the idea seems to work like halo does, with sandbox maps and team up death-match, with a bit of age of empires thrown in. (sorry for referencing 2 Microsoft games)
short flash movie (http://www.savage2.com/en/movies/savage2_114773_small.html)
** Edit: Well I have played it a couple of times now at 250ms ping servers. Looks like fun but a bit hard when playing with that sort of lag. Would be fun in a LAN game. I have searched high and low for the Australian servers that were mentioned in several different sites when I was doing my research. Well it seems that they are closed down: can't find them anywhere. If you know of any active ones, please let me know how I can connect.

I just got really bored of WoW, after you've leveled 4 80's, well almost 4 cause i stopped playing when i got my druid to 74, then the content gets really boring, especially when the raiding on your server sucks so bad its almost non-existant. So im looking for a new MMO. Doesn't seem to be a lot of good stuff out. I tried regnum, and it looks like a guildwars clone to be honest; I cant stand GW's btw. I will probably try out vendetta. Reminds me of EvE but i never played either one so it looks fun but i could be wrong. Anyone know of a MMO that a ex-wow'er would enjoy?

the only reason eve-online is 'awesome' is because of the huge player base and the free form sandbox approach. i play eve and the best thing about it is the political nature of it. large fights can be fun (as i've noticed they've made efforts to reduce system lag) and really allow the players to choose tactics/strategies.
it's not a cookie cutter MMO like WoW(just my impressions from playing one afternoon).

Lost faith and respect in / for the EVE lot a few times. I am aware its smaller but I would far rather play Vendetta over EVE now days.

I would like to recommend Ryzom, a beautiful mmorpg that recently went Open Source. It has a small friendly and helpful community, comes with a linux client and has affordable subscription fees.

i downloaded vendetta, and got a trial account, and i find it so boring. Its like you just float around in space .. "Oh hey there's an asteroid!" Whats the point?
You got one weapon, some sort of "energy" cannon, wow, thats just so super amazing. Atleast in wow and other mmo's you at least get 3 weapons/spells from the start.
