View Full Version : [ubuntu] want to copy home folder before upgrade

I want to try the upgrade feature. I've only done fresh installs before. I have neglected to create a seperate home drive. I would like to do that now, will the upgrade allow me to do that?

How do I copy my home folder to another partition prior to upgrading? I've tried but it says "omitting folder /home".

Thanks in advance for any help

You can make a separate /home:

Or simply backing up your /home and later restoring it. Some settings might not work right out after the upgrade. You might have to fiddle with them, but is workable. More important is to remove all third parties from your sources.list including the Medibuntu folder (if you have it as a repo) and having your OS fully updated before attempting the upgrade.

sorry for taking so long to reply but the guide didn't work. It moved my /home but I couldn't boot after that.

I downloaded a live cd copy of 8.04 burned it and did a fresh install.

and my new install recognized my new /home/rusty all was well

then I tried to add my wife as another user. it told me that /home/misty already exists (duh) and won't let me use it. Any ideas how to get around that?
