BTDT. Almost all of it, nearly verbatim.

I worked at a data center with this fella named Mike. Mike was nearly blind. This was in a time before remote desktops, HPOpenView, etc. Mike went into the datacenter to check server logs holding a clipboard (with a checklist) in one hand and a pencil in the other. Mike leaned forward to read the screen on the rack and pushed his pencil into the power button of the machine. He felt it click in and froze like a vietnam vet stepping on a tripwire (I think Mike may have been a Vietnam vet actually).

He stood there for about 30 minutes afraid to let go with his pencil knowing the server was going to turn off if he did. I found him there after realizing he had been gone longer than he should have. I talked him into realizing that there was nothing he could do, other than stand there until the next scheduled reboot (about 90 hours in the future).

The client was called first thing in the morning and actually forgave the downtime against our guarantee because it was just too funny.

LoL that was the best part - I was afraid to say anything b/c I figured LaRoza wouldn't like the p word :) Funniest part, though.
