When I go down it's usually something utterly fatal like a kernel trap from the iwl3945 modules (so help me Torvalds, if no one fixes those in the next month I'm going to move to another distro).

Hmm, I use it sometimes before I change my linux distro, so I can't say never. 'Normal' use, about once per 2-3 months.

I use Alt-SysRq-F more often because I am lazy.

The only time I used it other than just because I felt like it was when I was trying hardy beta and there was a problem with using my intel 965 graphics chip (the X server would not start).

I did it 3 times today. I was trying to install Hardy on a machine but every time I log into the desktop it freezes, so I did it, better than a hard reset at least :)
