Now I have realized that I spent way too much time on the computer for no good reasons, I think it's about time for me to pick up on this and learn programming again.
I know everyone is going to give me a different answer... but what would you guys suggest for me to learn?

I used to write BASIC programs all the way back then. I had experience with QuickBasic and VB 3.0.

I really wouldn't mind learning C, Java, or Python... but again, I am quite a bit out of the loop and am simply not quite sure where to start.

any good recommendations? something that's easy to work with on the ubuntu platform will be ideal.

See the sticky in the Programming Talk ;)

Also, see my wiki and site.

Python is the preferred language for Ubuntu, although any language could be used (Python is used extensively on Ubuntu).

Python is also the the language that most of the forum recommended on a poll (although online polls should not be seen as written in stone)

Python is easy to learn and useful to know from the beginning, so that would be a good place to start.

Don't listen to them! Python is better than what they suggest :).
