Hi, I have two old boxes lying around at home one is a celeron 300 with 32 megs of ram and a 4 gig hd, the other is a celeron 400 with 128. I have monitors keyboards. NICs etc for both. I want to put them to use but I wondered what I should do with them? thanks

Well, there are so many possibilities! :)

I say ditch the monitors and keyboards, through them in the closet with a cat5 running to it (or wireless) and stick with ssh from your main machine.

Then you could setup a print server, music server, file server, web server, the list goes on.... :)

Oh and I actually have an old machine like this setup just for bittorrent. That way I don't have to worry about turning off my main machine and losing my torrent connections.

Sounds like a job for Damn Small Linux.
Or Ubuntu Mini-RAM:

Also, they can make excellent door stops...

Ok seriously, you can put them on ebay or have them recycled.

You could run ClarkConnect Home 3.2 (general server linux) on one, and IPCop (linux firewall) on the other.

Well, you could run a half decent desktop on the second computer, and maybe even on the first one. Both of them would need something like IceWM, XFCE, or Fluxbox, but still completely functional. Don't sell them on ebay, you wouldn't get much at all, they're worth more to you.

Good Luck,

I say run Command line SETI@Home on 1 and Folding@Home on 2.
Inside a closet that is!

You could always have fun and mod the cases exterior.
That way if you mess it up, you don't need to worry too much.

Setting them up as Hack test beds is also nice.
Computers that you have for the purpose to try and hack into.

Making them a place to install something like Slackware is also a nice idea.
Or some other distro that you find to be a little out of you league.
Just screw those boxes up! With a drill!

Test your capabilities on them. Messing them up won't be such a bad thing.
I threw my old noisy as hell boxes out! Can't stand more noise.
Monitors I keep. Good for a rainy day when your monitor hits the fan.

You can ether run a firewall, or use ubuntu with windowmaker on the 128 MB RAM one.

I ran 128mb with a full Ubuntu load. Just recently upgraded to 256. I had to have a surprising amount of stuff open before it really slowed down getting into swap.

Lots of possibilities.

one is a celeron 300 with 32 megs of ram and a 4 gig hd

Use it (or both) as a thin client (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ThinClientHowto). :KS
