I installed XFCE the other day on my lappie because, frankly, it's a hunk of crap and I haven't messed with the Rodent in a year or so. Figured the machine might handle it a wee better than it can Gnome and KDE (both of which I've got installed). Downloaded it via Synaptic and all that, and got it set up, customized, and running (with XFWM's compositor even!), but it glitches sometimes when I load it up (seems like every other login or so). I log in and it just hangs (no desktop, just the default solid blue BG and a mouse cursor). Hit the trusty CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE and login again, and presto, she works like a charm.

Any ideas? The only thing I've got on autostart is AWN, and it was acting up before that, so I don't think it started with an unstable app autoloading and crashing all my business up.

The machine's just an old Dell w/ a PIII-M @ 1.2 ghz and the 830M chipset/graphics, if that helps.

I've got the same troubles too. I'm using gdm and I have it set to autologin.
