I want to know which multimedia programs are the best. I have heard xmms for audio and either xine or vlc for video. Is this correct or are others better? Will any be released soon I should look for? Thanks :D

All about preference. I use Rhythmbox for music and xine for videos.

Instead of XMMS you may want to look at its GTK2 equivalent, Beep Media Player, and instead of xine you might prefer totem-xine which integrates xine as a backend to Totem. VLC and mplayer are good for video as well.

Being a Gnome guy, I can't believe how long I went without realizing this. I usually hate KDE apps, but K3B and amaroK are way ahead of anything for Gnome. And they run fantastic natively.
The best apps are definitely amaroK for music and totem-xine for video, IMO of course.

Having discovered amaroK only today, I have to say I totally agree here; "Gnome people" like myself should come over their prejudices about KDE apps and just give amaroK a try. It's more advanced than anything I've come across for Gnome, and is yet simple to use and light for what it does.

I use gxine for video
and
beep media player for music.
I have no need for all my
music to be cataloged by my player
or view album art.
I just want something that'll load
instantly & I can drag/drop album directories
into. bmp is great.

i bchoose my apps based heavily on how they look or how well they blend in with my desktop. with that said i use:
eclair = to play albums
rhythmbox = for all other audio
vlc with the skins2 interface = all video/dvds
mpd or xmms-shell = all audio when i'm not in gnome
