I am looking to work on a project for our scout troop that will provide scouts without access to a pc at home a used pc running Ubuntu. We would like to have a master computer that we will build a concise environment and then create a new install disk with this setup and then use it on the other pc's. If I can keep lockstepped it should be easier to keep up with questions. Some scouts will have access to internet resources, others not. how can I also keep everybody updated with new features and security patches in that scenario.

Not a command line guru, if you can keep it short and sweet and use tools with graphic frontends that would be great.

Thanks - mike:-({|=:-({|=:-({|=

While this is perhaps nonresponsive, I'd warn you that as I envision what it is you want to do, all PCs need to be identical in resources (as to RAM, graphics card, monitor, etc.) for it to work cleanly and well. Wondering if use of the netinstall method might get you where you want to be, and I'll post a link for your consideration soon. As to updates, perhaps use of AptonCD would fit here? I've not used it, just read a bit about it.

EDIT: Hope this will be helpful (w/the embedded links) https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/#Server%20and%20network%20installations

try Remastersys (http://www.remastersys.klikit-linux.com/) . after you have 1 computer setup the way you want, you can make a bootable live cd of that computer and use it to install on other computers. great app.
