running 2.6.24-19-generic

how do i update to the latest kernel, i'm very new to ubuntu so if i need to use the terminal can you please provide what i need to type in the terminal?

2.6.24-19-generic is the latest that is tested in Hardy.

Unlike you know the termianl and need the new kernel and don't fear that your whole system will break, I would suggest that you stick to this one. With the next Ubuntu release you can get a new tested kernel.

are there any benefits of the new kernel that would be worth the risk? or is it just minor updates?

Honestly: it is a lot of work, if you are doing it the first time. There is a chance that your system breaks and unless in the new kernel are drivers that you are need, you won't notice a different - if it works. If it wont work, THAN you'll notice a different.

In short 99% of the time it is not worth the risk.
