Login not accepted

I installed 8.04 server as a dual boot with Vista the install seems to be there but it won't accept my login/password and eventually just shows my email address with a $ sign. How do I get past this bottleneck?

Do you get any errors on login? Or does it just take a long time?

No errors, just presents the login/password line several times, I fill it out each time and after the 3rd attempt it goes to the username@ etc line.

There is some text about using sudo to manage admin accounts and anything I enter in the username line results in a reference to the Bash shell...

OK, solved... I haven't felt this stupid in a long time. Thanks for not rubbing it in...
