Hi I installed the Ubuntu installation onto USB using UNetbotin but when booting from the USB the ubuntu logo comes up and then I just get a command line interface.

Maybe you installed the Server Edition. If you want a GUI:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

i havent installed anything yet, i downloaded the iso for the desktop and burned it to usb.

Maybe you installed the Alternate cd to USB. You say you are booting from it.
