The live CD seems to boot alright up until the point when the Xorg server should kick in and Ubiquity should start for the install and the --noapic --nolapic trick to fix this on most laptops fails to do anything to help am I missing anything obvious or what can I do to help get this fixed.

the GPU is an ATI Radeon X2300 HD 256 but ATI's site doesn't have a driver for it not even for Windows so I am at loss for how to get the driver for it though OpenSUSE 11.0 seems to be able to at least start X without too much reconfiguring.

your help is greatly appriciated.

thanks,
EDIT: fixed the problem

Hey minibeardeath,

Just boot the live cd in safe graphics mode: when the cd boots up select English (or whatever language you wish) then press F4 and select safe graphics mode. Then go ahead and boot from the cd. You shouldn't have anymore problems.
