Hello, I've got Ubuntu 8.04 installed, and I am downloading torrents... I was wondering if there is a program that can hide my IP address from the bad tracking sites... Thanks!

You could go through a proxy but there is no program that will hide your IP.

p.s. in the future can you not use 'how to' like that in the title unless you're posting a howto.

You can get some proxies like youhide.com and proxify.com to hide your IP.

These are some otheres

Please correct me if I am wrong, but Tor Networks and I suppose any other anonymizer is only making your IP Address anonymous to the source you are downloading from. Your address is quite apparent to the anonymizer.

In the case of Tor Networks, this puts your traffic in the hands of just about anybody. See for example,

but torrents will be very, very, very slow on TOR... even normal surfing is... and probably most nodes won't even allow it.

there is no real way to anonomize your ip. you can block other ip's from connecting to your (swarms)with moblock for linux or peerguardian for windows, but data always goes "somewhere" and that is why...... vpn's are the only way to stay anonymous on the internet and they would be slow as hell. please correct me if i'm wrong folks... i want to learn too :)

i personally use Tor, and yes, it does slow down browsing, and still requires a proxy server to run through, but for the average user it's sufficient to anonymize your IP. here's a really simple, blow by blow how to on how to install Tor in Ubuntu

i think flytripper has what you're looking for in moblock... you don't want to necessarily hide your ip, but you don't want to allow "bad" people from connecting to you via torrenting.

I read an article once about a service called ItsHidden. Maybe that will do what you need?

Hi,...

I dont think so you can hide your IP address in general.

I am good at this!

is where it's at! :)

oh EDIT -- it's not good for torrenting though really, it's slow. For that kinda stuff you want either a really good, reliable proxy that won't give away your details, or just encrypt bittorrent traffic if you want privacy and be cautious around dodgy trackers on the net.

I get great speeds with Tor dling torrents. Browsing is a little slower as always, but for some reason I always get good speeds. Tor is the best option for hiding your ip to dl warez although many find it impolite to be using others donated bandwidth to do such thing. ..In any event make sure to set your Torrent client's web proxy to listen on 8118.

I heard you also have to be careful of... DNS leaks or.. something like that? I dunno, I was given all these warnings about taking precautions using certain programs with Tor.

I might be wrong, torrenting could be fine, I'm just not sure o.O

You can use the built in ip blocker in deluge to increase your safety and when torrenting. It's difficult to get caught and when using an ip blacklist you are about 5x more protected, lol.

Wrong.

There is nothing illegal about the BitTorrent protocol.
What is illegal is breaking copyright law.

Downloading legal software (anything GPL - Ubuntu ISO's etc.) is a perfectly legal use of torrents.

Also encrypting your torrents doesn't really protect you if you are downloading illegal files, the copyright holders can tell if you are uploading a copyrighted file (which is the illegal part) by connecting as a peer. Anyone who seeds to them can be traced by there IP address, encrypted or not.

PS - I am a UK resident, laws differ from country to country.
