I have an Xp machine with Ubuntu 8.04 installed on it. Ubuntu became corrupt. All my attempts to fix it have made it worse. First I could only boot XP from Grub, now I get error 16. If I try to boot from a lice Ubuntu CD my computer just cycles through the password screens over and over. It somehow is getting confused with the set up on my hard drive. I am booted up with a Live Kubuntu CD now. What really is bothering me now is that my windows partition can't be read either now, they say won't mount because "NFST marked to be in use." I was hoping to edit the Windows boot.ini file back to how it was before Linux, but I can't read or write to the partition. It says I can try to force a mount, but it says there is risk in doing that. What should I do at this point? I was thinking of either the forces mount to change the boot file or removing the drive and set it up as a slave in an other computer so I can get my data off it. How should I proceed?
