So am I, except I'm not being sarcastic. If you think Microsoft is a corrupted company now, wait until it's under Ballmer's direct control for a year or so.

Bill Gates retires? So what does that mean? He's going to play golf and shop? Take cruises? Choose charities?
What is this? An affirmation?
He can't just quit. Though I can understand why he'd be sick of Microsoft. He doesn't need them. He's got lots of money and he could do some totally different and very fun things if he put that garage project behind him.
Just trying to look on the bright side...

If I had MS stock I would be demanding Ballmer resign. As someone who does not support MS I think he will really run MS to the ground.
1) Bad attitude, he makes people want to hate him and the company
2) Vista, Zune, OOXML etc. etc. (I guess you could chuck in xbox's)... all largely failures.
3) He seems to not fully understand what he is up against (it could be a fantastic act?)
4) Seems dominated by personal vendettas and obsessions (google/yahoo)
and the list goes on but I'd rather read my book. I don't know the guy so who am I to say what he is like though.

I'm pretty sure he installed Ubuntu 8.04 and he's been using Linux since. Apparently he realizes it's all over for M$. He was smart to jump ship early.:guitar:

well, in light of microsoft withought bill gates, i decided it would be a good time to celebrate by completing my now 4 year switch to linux! (4 years on and off ;) ) so i'm happy to say thati am now officially 100% windows free! (i had a dual boot with xp and ubuntu 8.04 32 bit on the laptop for the past 6 months) but i am now trying out linux mint on said laptop. on my desktop, i have a dual boot of ubuntu desktop 8.04 64 bit, and ubuntu studio 8.04 64 bit. i am just so exited to see where linux will go in the future! bye-bye M$! we love you, Bill Gates!:guitar:

He will be remembered for a few years yet. about five miles down the road from where I live is "The Bill Gates" building, luckily it is the modern insubstantial type of building. It will be easily cleared when something else is required. Not one of the substantial buildings of Cambridge University (like Kings College Chapel, Trinity College or Queens College).

Has he gone? Thank the Lord for that! Maybe we'll have less of these "isn't Bill Gates wonderful" articles and documentaries now. I was on another forum yesterday, and someone who was registered with Microsoft (I don't know for what reason) said he had received a "goodbye to Bill" email.
Good grief.
I mean, I admire the chap, but the endless publicity really is very embarrassing. What is he, royalty?
So thanks Bill. You've gone, and believe it or not the rest of the world will get over it.

Just one point, Mr. Gates will be working for Microsoft 1-2 days a week as a non-executive chairman.

So after more than an hour of craziness and making my programs list garbage and being scared and seeing that Microsoft.com is a terrible website I haven't run Moviemaker and I haven't got the plus package. The lack of attention to usability represented by these experiences blows my mind.

Bye bye, Bill. ;)

Ballmers been in effective control for nearly 20 years. Gates has had very little to do with MS operationally for years.
Its just official now.

Sorry, but I'm going to call ******** on this until I see it either in video form or from a reputable news source. There's no way that this wouldn't be huge news were it true.

What it means is that he will devote the rest of his life to giving his personal wealth away to worthwhile causes.
