[SOLVED] RubyGems: Can't install mechanize gem

Entered:

gem install mechanize

Got the following:

ERROR: Error installing mechanize:
ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension.

/usr/bin/ruby1.8 extconf.rb install mechanize
extconf.rb:1:in `require': no such file to load -- mkmf (LoadError)

Am I missing a dependency?

Would appreciate any advice as to how to fix.

Maybe you need the ruby1.8-dev package installed.

Apparently I didn't have it and it seems there is some progress.
Would really appreciate it if you could have a look at the following because its not quite right yet.

Did a sudo apt-get install ruby1.8-dev and that completed OK.

Thanks rocsco! I created a script for doing the install. It works in both 8.04 and 8.10. It can be downloaded from the same post.

I got 'sudo gem install mechanize' to work but this solution didn't go for me 100%. I had to add anything from sudo apt-get install for libxslt

include the following to that large apt-get install list:
libxslt-ruby libxslt-ruby1.8 libxslt1.1 libxslt1-dev libxslt1-dbg

afterwards 'sudo gem install mechanize' loaded 2 gems, mechanize and nokogiri

Otherwise you'll get the following errors
