PCI-e Axle nVidia 6600 512mb
I have given up on trying to decrease my fan speed somehow. nvclock just states that my card does not support it. I have been able to decrease the noise to a bareable level by keeping my OpenGL option in nvidia-settings at "Performance" rather than "Quality." The whine of this fan is still pretty heinous though.

I have considered replacing the cooling, but it's not something I have ever done before. Also I am hoping to avoid blocking a PCI slot. I have a great Gigabyte MicroATX card. It's awesome except those goofballs put he PCI-e x16 on the wrong side of the PCI-e x1 slots! If I have to block a slot, I want it to be a PCI-e x1.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a cooler or even a quiet fan replacement - can you even do that? - that would not cause my video card to block the slot disgnated for my PVR 150. How hard are these things to install?

Or should I just wait for the nVidia driver to be improved so that it doesn't kick up to full blast even when my card is only 41C under "strain." I think the thing idles at 38C. It's not a very hot card, but the fan sure acts like it. I know the fan is keeping it cool, but I wish I could tell it that it can tone it down a little... it's okay if the GPU gets up to 50-55C.

i use one of these:

the heatsink is linked to the block by pipes, and you can attatch it so the pipes loop around and have the heatsink on the other side of the card, or in my case, i bent the actual pipes so it kinda looks like this attatched image

You could try a water cooling system for your system and video card.

If you want to do it ghetto style, you could stick on a lot of copper coins:
But I wouldn't recommend it - Video cards get a lot warmer than RAM does (that and it's a bit of a silly mod).

Zalman make good stuff, I'm not sure if this is any use to you, but have a look here (http://www.quietpc.com/gb-en-gbp/products/vgacoolers), it's a starting point.

Thanks for the help everyone, but I think I need to clarify the situation. My case is very small, which further limits my options. I would jump on the idea of a passive heatsink or water cooling, if I wasn't so sure that I would be hitting all sort of wires, fans, the PSU. It's cramped in there to say the least.

I had one idea though. Aren't there fan controllers that let you control fan speed with a nob? I see plenty of these on newegg.com but they are all for 3 pin fans. This fan only has 2.

Any suggestions?
