3 requiremnts
1. works in ubuntu
2. has optical spdif out to external av receiver
3. 7.1 audio

I just can't decide plus I'm completely clueless what works in ubuntu
only nice thing about windows is not worrying about compatibility

i also have another question
is this even possible
for example, my mobo has 7.1 audio but if you connect though the coax spdif rather than analog connections, it only supplies 5.1 audio, at least that's what it says in the manual

i was looking at the bluegears xmystique 7.1
i just don't know
if it's compatible
if you get 7.1 though the optical connection

Try the Chaintech AV-710. It gets great reviews from head-fi.org (audiophile forum). It's pretty much the best cheapest sound card you can get in terms of audio quality.

I am running it right now and it's working flawlessly. You have to change your asound.state to get the high-resolution jack working but that takes two seconds. Here are the instructions to do that in case you're interested:

And here's the newegg link for the card itself
