Hi all,
I am a total newbie to linux, I tried 12 months ago using PCLinuxOS but was unable to use my windows partitions. So when I bought this months APC (Oz magazine) and it had an article and live cd on Ubuntu 8.04.
I tried and I liked it and now I am stuck, the last command line work I have done is in the days of DOS 6.22, so please provide comprehensive details on how to get info required.
PROBLEM:
I have looked through and can not find a scenario so far on these forums that have put a positive light on the subject. Ubuntu installs and upgrades perfectly and I am happy. Other people have shown me their installations and would have prefered KDE rather than Gnome - but thats only minor.
I tried Kubuntu and liked it but it had a stupid proble about "smart" updater and when I tried to upgrade it with the SMART it said I needed SMART Updater - NOT so smart me thinks?????
Anyway searching through the forums, I have tried a number of suggestions on dual boot with Vista and all I get is error 22 and other errors, I even tried to install on a clean drive and used all its space for linux, I have tried to have the installer place grub on the windows boot, or on the same drive as the new installation, I have tried Neogrub.
ABOUT MY SYSTEM
Pentium Dual 3000, 2 Gig RAM and 2 x SATA drives (non-raid) and one IDE Drive, the system boots on Sata 1 and I have dedicated a 160Gb to linux on Sata 2, Sata 1 holds partitions containing Data, XP and one for the worlds largest virus -- VISTA. My XP is now corrupt and will be wiped as soon as I get linux working. I only need Vista for movie editing and desk top publishing - are there any replacements for these available on linux??
From what I have figured the linux partition is "root (2,0) or sbc: here is part of the menu.lst file

I cant help thinking that it is still Vista, because manglesoft in their wisdom decided to rearrange the partition structure when Vista boot and call it C Drive irrespective of the actual install partition. Probably manglesofts way to stuff people up trying to improve their systems, afterall we dont actually own our own computers as they are actuall on loan to us from manglesoft - Good bye Bill Gates.
