Hi I am in need of some help,

I am thinking of installing the newest version of Ubuntu (8.04) on my desktop which currently runs on Windows Vista. I do not want to erase Vista, but have Ubuntu as the second OS on my comp. on another partition on my hard drive. I had tried this before on my old computer, but I got really stuck during the partitioning process on the Ubuntu Live CD; I couldn't figure out how to properly make a distinct set of partitions that were necessary for Ubuntu while at the same time keeping the Windows OS that was already present on the HD. I would really appreciate if I can get some specific steps on precisely how to do this. Otherwise I would be really hesitant to install Ubuntu, as I don't want to lose my Vista and all of the important files I have on it. Thanks.

take a look at wubi. It is designed for people who want a easy way to do the partition and booting. It will set the dual boot up no problem.
