Can not connect to the net HELP!!

I just bought a new hard drive and installed Ubuntu 7.10. Finally I am rid of Windows (hopefully forever). The problem I have is that I can not connect to the net. I have tried to connect wireless and used the ether. Nothing is working. I updated the restricted drivers, one is a modem driver (updated fine) and the other Broadcom 43xx chip set (will not let me update). I do not know what to do from here. This is all new to me. So I implore you to help!

The computer I am using is a Dell Inspiron 1150.

Using the Ethernet modem,un-plug and plug the modem back in after a few moments.

Or

Use the same instruction above and restart the computer.
