View Full Version : Toshiba BIOS password insanity

I am at the end of my rope. This morning a was fooling around with my BIOS setup, and just for fun I decide to increase my security by using a wicked password. It includes numbers, upper and lower-case letters, and exactly ONE apostrophe. So I reboot, get a password prompt, and my password doesn't work. Odd. A little google-fu on another computer reveals that OMG TOSHIBA IS STUPID. You can't have non-alphanumerics in your password. So much for security. So now I'm stuck. I tried the alt+039 for the apostrophe, but I have no keypad on my laptop so who knows if that worked. I also tried the loopback device described here (http://www.cgsecurity.org/index.html?cmospwd.html) but for some reason it doesn't work, even though I used a multimeter to check the continuity of the pins.

I am ready to scream. Does anybody have any ideas? I will do anything short of giving Toshiba one cent for this (my warranty is expired). Yes, I know I was stupid, but Toshiba builds its stupidity into every laptop.

Thank you for letting me vent...

It's hard to imagine that they would let a bug like that pass in this day in age. When you posted about this problem I assumed it was for a laptop you bought in 1995.

Crazy, isn't it?

Well, I found the solution in this (http://drkeyboard.net/viewtopic.php?p=14096&sid=32463e63116949d22c4246f84898921a) thread. Turns out that Toshiba turns apostrophes into commas. How can this be real...?

Thanks, and sorry to bother everybody...
