Hello All,

I am fairly new to the new community and have finally been able to get 7.04 feisty fawn up an running. Now I am trying to upgrade to 8.04 Hardy Heron but in the update manager it asks me to update to 7.10. When I try to do that it says it fails to connect to the servers so I am trying to figure out a way to upgrade from either a USB stick or DVD Disc. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Update: I also tried following these instructions here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardyUpgrades

I'm not sure if you saw it on that page you linked to or not, but if network upgrade fails, you can update from the alternate install CD. Go to http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download and make sure that you check the box that says "Check here if you need the alternate desktop CD. This CD does not include the Live CD, instead it uses a text-based installer" before downloading. I think you will need to upgrade to 7.10 first and then from there to 8.04.

Also, upgrading through multiple releases like that can be problematic, in my experience (although I'm sure it works fine for other people). Depending on how much you have invested in your Ubuntu installation, it might be easier just to do a fresh install of 8.04.

Try this:
sudo sed -i 's/feisty/gutsy/' /etc/apt/sources.list

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Make sure your Feisty is fully updated. Remove all third parties from your /etc/apt/sources.list

I am having a similar problem. I can not seem to update from 7.10 to 8.04.1 no matter the method I attempt. I have tried using package manager and it just stops responding. I downloaded the alternative CD running the instruction and it too just stops.
I have tried all the steps provided in this thread and a couple others, but nothing seems to get past the installer just stopping.

If you have the disk space, you should create a separate /home partition:

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/separatehome

And then do a clean install of 8.04.1. For starters, it will be much faster, and you will run into less problems in the long run.
