Hi there! I'm looking for a good notebook to use with Ubuntu, and I had dropped by the Dell page, which offers some of its line preinstalled with the best OS in the world (and you bet I'm not talking about Vista).
However, I've put my looks on the Inspiron 1720, which is not one of those offered with Ubuntu, mainly because of its graphic card and its better CPU. I'm concerned, though, that some of its components may not work properly with Linux (that's why they might not be offering this particular model), so I'd like people with Ubuntu in 1720s or similar computers to share their experiences. The link is Dell - Inspiron 1720 (Spanish) (http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspnnb_1720?c=es&cs=esdhs1&l=es&s=dhs) and I'm targeting a model around the 1099€, with some customizations.
If that were not possible, my second option is an Inspiron 1525, which is offered with Linux, thus precluding any compatibility problems. The showstopper is that the gfx card is an Intel X3100, whose performance I don't know. The only other possibility is an XPS 1330, which allows me to choose a GeForce 8400 for graphics, but is a bit more expensive. Both are at Dell - Linux laptops (Spanish) (http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/topics/topic.aspx/emea/segments/gen/client/es/ubuntu_landing?c=es&cs=esdhs1&l=es&s=dhs&~ck=mn) and the version I'd get would be pretty customized to bring them as much in line with the 1720 as possible (4GB mem, Core 2 Duo T7250 CPU, more HD, etc.), so the final prices would be pretty similar.
I'm requesting advice, experiences with similar computers (drivers compatibility, etc.) and whatever you can tell me. Any help would be appreciated! :KS
