You don't need the bookmarks toolbar when you have Fast Dialhttps://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5721
Just make sure to set each thumbnail to not refresh as you can't
read them and it just wastes time to reload them.
btw I know this is based of something opera has.
I don't give a

I remember using this very early on in its life, it was cool but used up the whole about page, and didn't give you a choice of how many different ones you could have. This was my favorite feature of opera.

You can have any number of thumbnails.

Wasn't always like that.
But yeah, it's great, my whole family is using it now. And yes, it's an Opera feature...Opera also has a bunch of other great features. It's not bad or evil just because it's proprietary.
I wouldn't necessarily use this as a bookmarks replacement. It gets hard to use if you, well, have many bookmarks.
Also, a tip is to use custom images for the flash dial thumbnails. It makes them more readable if you have a lot of sites you commonly visit. I did this by just downloading the logo of all the sites I commonly visit (various google services, wikipedia, these forums, allmusic, newegg, etc). It usually just takes a simple right click > "Save Image As."

I use the Speed Dial plugin (http://speeddial.uworks.net/). Lots of configuration options and it looks great.

Yeah I meant the bookmarks TOOLBAR.Because you can't fit very many
bookmarks on there anyway.

Definitely.
Between SD and Firefox's searchable URL bar, I actually have less than five bookmarks.

Speed Dial, Mouse Gestures, IRC client, bittorrent client...
What other Opera features are going to be copied next?

Been using Fast Dial for some time. Love it. Especially being able to have as many thumbnails as one wants.

lol! Where there are good ideas, there are those who copy it. Opera should be proud they inspired these. :D

Meh, Speed Dial (FF) lets you specify as well. And when using the standard set up, they're actually readable. And you can scroll through them. And it actually uses FF3's scaling system to render the thumbnails. And a bunch of other things...

But I think people who praise Firefox and knock Opera should pay a little more respect to the greatest browser in the world.
I don't mind (and think it is a good thing) for projects to learn from others, but I don't like it when they try to pretend it is "theirs".

No one did pretend that this was Firefox's. It just improved on an already good idea (tell me you can set your own custom pic or you can give it more than 9 thumbnails in opera, I haven't seen that you could).

Firefox's best feature is that one has the ability to copy a feature from another browser. If opera doesn't have a feature or addon you want, tough beans.
btw the fast dial page mentions it is similar to opera so what are you
complaining about?

Yeah, and Speed Dial's page even links to Opera's site. That's plenty of respect and attribution.

I like Firefox and Opera, but I've never really gotten used to Speed Dial. I like using iGoogle with the Enhanced Bookmarks so I can also see RSS feeds, Gmail, Weather, and Google search all from my home page :D. That beats Speed Dial IMO :)

FTW, and it works in Konqueror :)
EDIT: Wow, I just realized that gives a lot of personal info :P Oh well, I trust you guys :D

I have it installed here about a month back. Was kinda curious if it was possible to assign a certain group of bookmarks into the fast dial tab and have it show on demand, not when I open a new tab or a default page. To elaborate further, I have a lot of webcomics bookmarked and not all of them have RSS. If I could say create fast dial:webcomics as if it was a bookmark and load it up and set to auto-refresh, then I don't have to open a new tab for every webcomic just to find which ones are updated.

Open in new tab doesn't work for me, so it's worthless.

But Fast Dial just replaces about:blank, so You can open a new tab and just start typing. Speed Dial opens in each new tab its local site and one can mark all the text in address bar and only then can start typing. In this way, Speed Dial restrict one's usability.
And, for the second, Fast Dial is - IMHO - prettier. It has nice, subdued colors. I see Speed Dial as screaming at me.

You can open it in a new tab by middle-clicking, as always...
