Printer recommendation please

Hello

I'm after a basic printer that I can use to print simple documents and print my Ordinance Survey maps on. I'm not after a Photo quality printer because I have one of those and it just costs too much to keep happy in epson ink. Plus the sodding thing will not accept generic ink either.

So, any recommendation's for a Linux friendly printer?

I just bought an HP LaserJet 1009 for work. A little hassle to get it working but I install latest HPLIB and works like a treat.

Was £85 and the quality is very good

most HP inkjet printers are plug and play in linux. and thay will work just fine with generic ink.

HP is the best. Most work just out of the box. If you want to check, then look at the HPLIP (http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_devices/index.html) site.

DO NOT get Cannon. My Cannon printer only prints properly in black and white in Linux.

Except the 1009 which I needed to install HPLIB :D

My HP Laserjet P1005 works like a charm in Debian after configuring cups and installing some hp software from the repos.

I would suggest looking at Brother, they have good Linux support, have separate ink tanks and work well with compatibles which can be sourced on eBay for pennies.

Another for HP never had any problems. I always buy HP printers now.

I have an HP Deskjet D1420, and I can confirm that it's plug-n-play. Automatically detected. Everything that I've tried so far prints the way that it's supposed to look. It satisifies your requirements, and I think it costs about $50.
