One of the (few) things I miss from Windows is a sidebar (of the Google variety - I was on XP). I spent ages looking round for sidebars for linux/ubuntu, eventually deciding that Desklets was the best of a bad bunch. Yesterday the obviousness struck me in the face though...
- Right-click Gnome Panel > New Panel
- Right-Click > Properties. Orientation: Right; Size:100px. Add a funky background image and add applets at will. There we go: instant sidebar!:guitar:

Whatcha think?

There is a Google sidebar (http://www.getdeb.net/release/2798) :)

Something like the sidebar in Fedora might be what you're looking for. Not looked at installing it in Ubuntu yet though personally.

I like the screenlets, particularly the sysmonitor that I use as a sidebar. I just can't get it to persist across sessions.

Just install the newest screenlets (not from the ubuntu repo's)

The sidebar is included by default, and widgets are resized to fit in it automatically.
