Recently, I damaged my hard drive's partition table and it looked as if I had lost a lot of data. Thankfully I had Testdisk on a pendrive. It restored my partition table and now I've got my data back! This is the second time that Testdisk has recovered data on my hard drive. I strongly recommend that you make bootable disks in case of emergency.

TestDisk saved everything on my disk.. twice! No other program (from Hiren's Boot CD) couldn't fix it, but this helpful program.

PhotoRec isn't too bad either, I've managed to recover .jpg files from a formatted XP machine.

All you need in order to use TestDisk is the Ubuntu live desktop cd:

System>Administration>Software Sources>enable 'universe' repository

sudo apt-get install testdisk

sudo testdisk

I once managed to delete my Master Boot Record, when playing around with fdisk. Luckily TestDisk was able to restore it. I won't be so careless with fdisk in the future. It's a powerful and potentially dangerous tool.

Glad we have TestDisk to save the day :D

I was changing the partitions on an external drive so I could back up data on a laptop, then format and re-install. During the partitioning their was a lightning storm and there where brief power outages. The back up seemed like it had gone fine and I was able to read all data on the external drive, so I proceeded to reformat the laptops drive. When I tried to plug the external drive into my desktop, it showed up as unpartitioned space. I hought my data was gone but TestDisk saved me.
