i started my linux journey with ubuntu but now wanna go places.
i would like to try fedora ..but which version ? what i need is consistency and not the daily woes of which i am now accustomed in ubuntu.

my system specs are :
core2duo 1.86 GHz
1 gb ram
intel 965 motherboard (which is blacklisted and despite all my efforts i couldnt play compiz:cry:)

one more thing is that, my processor is 64 bit, but the ubuntu3 bit version worked more efficiently on my comp. than the ubuntu 64bit.
regarding fedora, which version should i go for ??
this is a serious issue coz i have a not so very good internet speed !!

thanks a lot !!

In general Fedora is going to be less stable than Ubuntu. Ubuntu is actually pretty conservative about software releases--only stuff that's stable will get pushed out in the stable version of Ubuntu (for now, Hardy). And updates only deliver bug fixes or security patches, not newer versions of software which lack thorough testing. I used Fedora from fall 2006-summer 2007 and ran into a lot of problems because bleeding-edge stuff gets pushed out through updates before it's as stable as it should be.

So the bottom line is, don't expect things to work a lot better in Fedora than they do in Ubuntu. Have you tried troubleshooting your Ubuntu problems thoroughly? It's unlikely that the difficulties you're having with Ubuntu are going to disappear in Fedora; they're both pretty similar underneath.

Also keep in mind that Fedora is not that hard to use--it's not Debian or Gentoo--but I think that by and large, Ubuntu is more user-friendly. Fedora to me seemed catered to programmers and the technically-inclined, while Ubuntu is "Linux for human beings," or at least it tries to be.

If you do want to try Fedora, I'd recommend using the next-to-latest stable release, just so that the stuff will be a little less bleeding-edge.

But keep in mind that this is all just my opinion of Fedora; others may have different perspectives on it.

Fedora 8 64bit was very stable on the system I tested it on. I would say that Fedora 9 64bit should have stabilized a bit by now, as well.

Either of the above versions should work without much issue.

Here are two guides

Also what are the daily woes of Ubuntu you are trying to avoid by moving to another distro, as you may not be able to avoid some issues.

I still like Fedora more than Ubuntu in the long scheme of things since it supports more of my hardware.

Never tried it on an Intel Videocard... but I don't think it'll misbehave.
