I installed a firefox addon called ServerSpy that lets you see the Server header sent from websites that display the apache version and the OS. Here are some websites I found running ubuntu servers

Internet Archive http://www.archive.org/

Apache/2.0.54 (Ubuntu) PHP/5.0.5-2ubuntu1.4 mod_ssl/2.0.54 OpenSSL/0.9.7g

Pwned - A Society of Gamers http://pwned.com/

Apache/2.2.8 (Ubuntu) PHP/5.2.4-2ubuntu5.1 with Suhosin-Patch mod_ssl/2.2.8 OpenSSL/0.9.8g

Welcome to StumbleUpon http://www.stumbleupon.com/

Apache/2.0.55 (Ubuntu) PHP/5.1.2

Apache/2.0.55 (Ubuntu) PHP/5.1.2 mod_ssl/2.0.55 OpenSSL/0.9.8a

Kubuntu - The KDE Desktop http://www.kubuntu.org

Apache/2.2.6 (Ubuntu)

Edubuntu Home Page | Edubuntu http://www.edubuntu.org

Apache/2.0.55 (Ubuntu) PHP/5.1.2 mod_ssl/2.0.55 OpenSSL/0.9.8a

Apache/2.0.55 (Ubuntu) PHP/5.1.2 mod_ssl/2.0.55 OpenSSL/0.9.8a

I also run my personal web site and a few others off of my Ubuntu server. So my question is, do you guys know of any other (major or small) websites running on Ubuntu powered servers? It's kind of interesting to know

Some guy over at a forum about music recording was slagging off anything that wasn't Windows or Mac, whilst the rest of use were in a discussion about Ardour's potential to be at the heard of any studio.

He said he didn't know what the big deal about linux was - apparently linux is slower and less reliable than Windows, and has no support from hardware vendors ("all drivers are open source and so home made rubbish").

He went quiet when I pointed him to statistics about Linux's market penetration in servers, and in particular that the forum he spent his life on was hosted in a bog standard LAMP server (I quoted him the HTTP header like you are doing here).

It wasn't Ubuntu, but still Linux... thanks to this thread for making me realise that the server string was sent in HTTP headers, otherwise I wouldn't have managed that healthy blow to his pride :p

It's showing how Ubuntu linux is starting to grow more and more popular. more people are using it to power their web sites and businesses.

I don't think we're getting worked up about it, it's just fun to see how Ubuntu has come along so far as to be the OS of choice for so many major companies and their web sites.

Apache is the best for servers. Ubuntu, being an operating system uses Apache to host websites.

However, Apache is not standalone, and needs an operating system to run :)

If you're hosting it under the same IP as you're viewing it on, your router may catch that and send you to http://localhost instead. It still should sent the server ID but that might be why.

It shows up as
Apache/2.2.8 (Ubuntu) PHP/5.2.6-0.dotdeb.1 with Suhosin-Patch for me, so don't worry.

If you want all the headers from your website, install httpliveheaders (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3829) (a Firefox add-on) or install 'curl':

sudo aptitude install curl
and run this command:

sudo aptitude install curl
and run this command:

curl --head matthewboston.com

Thanks for the info. But no, I'm at work using FF3 on XP. Maybe that has something to do with it? I will install the plugin on my HH machine tonight and see. Thanks nonetheless.

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 to host my website www.matthewboston.com (http://www.matthewboston.com/)

Why is it when I visit my site above, ServerSpy says "(unknown)"?

Displays Apache/2.2.8 (Ubuntu) for me. try refreshing the page if you just installed the plugin.

There's nout like setting up your server to report exactly what OS, web server, version and extension it is running! Perfect security for everyone.

For those running Apache, set your ServerTokens directive to 'prod' to give as little information as possible.

Could write an application to do it.

And though the sites aren't running it just yet, I'm on a team of people moving all of the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools websites over to an ubuntu amazon ec2 server. This includes all of the school/building websites, main district site, and other programs like vapa and communityeducation.
